Tapatalk

Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.

Overview

Tapatalk is not a social network of its own but a layer on top of other people's forums: a mobile app and a network that gathers thousands of independent forums running on engines such as phpBB, vBulletin and XenForo into a single interface. A forum owner installs a plugin — and their community becomes reachable from the shared app.

The platform describes itself like this: “Tapatalk brings you to people who share your own passions and interests… Tapatalk is different from traditional social media — the people you meet will be as excited by your hobby as you are”. This is a claim about itself, not an independent assessment.

There is a second part to the product too — Tapatalk Groups, forum hosting on Tapatalk's side. Its description cannot be read from outside: the page is closed.

Who's here

The only figure the platform names itself is the number of connected forums. It is even carried in the app's name: “Tapatalk — 200,000+ Forums… Tapatalk connects to over 200,000 online forums worldwide”; the same figure appears in Google Play. There is no counting methodology and no date given.

Independent measurements from the app stores look like this. Google Play shows 10 million+ downloads, a rating of 2.6 with 295 thousand reviews, and a USK 18+ age label. The App Store shows a rating of 4.4 from 16 thousand ratings, an age rating of 16+, a size of 125.9 MB and "EN + 25 More" languages. The gap between 2.6 and 4.4 is not a typo: these are two different stores with different review bases.

The interface language of the home page is English (lang="en" in the markup). The list of forums in the app description gives a sense of the geography: alongside the American MacRumors and AnandTech stand the Spanish HTCMania, the Polish Wizaz.pl, the French Frandroid, the Turkish hisse.net, the Croatian Forum.hr and the South African MyBroadband.

Who the operator is remains an open question. In the App Store the developer is listed as Everforo, Inc, in Google Play as Everforo Inc., while on the site itself the link to the corporate profile leads to the LinkedIn page of Quoord Systems Limited. We were unable to disentangle the former and current legal entities.

Getting started

Registration starts right from the home page: the link to the form is tagged with the parameter register?register_channel=ttg_tapatalk, with a sign-in link next to it. What exactly is asked at registration, what the age requirements are and how verification works cannot be learned from outside: the registration page, like every internal page of the site, does not open.

For a forum owner the route is different — install the plugin on your own engine. Here comes an important warning: the official Tapatalk plugin for WordPress in the WordPress.org catalogue was closed on 12 December 2017 at the author's request, and the closure is described as permanent. So at least one branch of the integration has long been unsupported.

What you can publish

The app promises “unlimited Photo and Video sharing” and instant push notifications. The real limits on message length, attachment size and file types are set not by Tapatalk but by the engine of the particular forum and its administrators: the app merely displays someone else's forum.

The rules, accordingly, are doubled too — the platform's rules and each forum's rules. The text of Tapatalk's end user agreement (end_user_license_agreement) and the agreement for forum owners (forum_owner_license_agreement) exist on the site — the links are visible in the markup of the home page — but neither page opened for us. We will therefore not retell their contents.

How to grow

The promotion mechanics inside Tapatalk cannot be read from outside: the pages introduction, tapatalk_groups and tapatalk_mobile are closed. All that is reliably known is the app's advertising model: it is “Contains ads” under Google Play's labelling, and the paid VIP status removes that advertising.

One more detail the platform discloses itself: “Tapatalk is a member of the eBay Partner Network. The forum owner may earn commissions from qualifying purchases made through affiliate links on this site”. So affiliate links in the network are provided for at the product level, and the income from them goes to the forum owner.

Path to monetization

Tapatalk does not pay the authors of posts — at least, no such programme appears on any page we could open. Money in the system moves the other way: the user pays to switch off advertising.

The VIP subscription terms are described in the app store: “VIP status is US$0.99 per month subscription, and will auto-renew until you elect to cancel”. The same place gives the details: subscription periods of a month or a year; choosing the monthly subscription gives you a free trial month; you must cancel no later than 24 hours before the trial ends, otherwise you are charged; renewal is automatic unless you cancel 24 hours before the end of the current period. Google Play confirms the same price: “Sign up to VIP to remove ads for $.99/month”.

The prices of Tapatalk Groups — the forum hosting — cannot be learned from outside: the page is closed.

Tools and automation

Tapatalk has historically had an API: the forum plugin talks to the service through exactly that, and links to the sections tapatalk.com/api/api_section.php and tapatalk.com/api_tos can be found around the internet. We could open none of these pages — the server refuses. We therefore give neither the set of methods nor the API's terms of use.

The only confirmed fact about integrations is the already mentioned closure of the WordPress plugin in December 2017. We found no third-party scheduling or analytics tools with confirmed Tapatalk support.

Limits and rules

Formally this is a network of forums, and the main limitation here is organisational: you deal not with the platform but with the administration of each particular forum. You cannot agree a presence on someone else's forum with Tapatalk — the forum owner decides.

Age restrictions differ by store: the App Store sets "16+", Google Play "USK: Ages 18+". Google Play also reports that the app may share device identifiers with third parties and may collect personal information and activity history, that data is encrypted in transit, and that data deletion can be requested.

We cannot set out the rules on advertising and self-promotion directly: the relevant documents are closed. The practical conclusion does not change because of that — before publishing anything commercial, ask permission from the administration of the forum you intend to post on.

Who it's for

Tapatalk is worth considering in two cases. The first: you already have a forum of your own and want to give members a mobile app without building one. The second: your topical audience lives on niche forums and you need a way to read and run them from a phone.

Does not suit those looking for a platform with an audience of its own and clear advertising rules: the audience here belongs to someone else, each forum sets its own rules, and Tapatalk's own documents were unreadable on the date of our check. Nor does it suit anyone who needs a transparent budget: the prices for forum hosting cannot be read from outside.
