Litnet

Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.

Overview

Litnet is a literary platform where an author posts a book chapter by chapter as it is being written and sells access to it before it is finished. What the reader buys is either a "subscription" to a growing book or a completed work in full.

The platform explains its model directly: “on Litnet authors publish their books free of charge or sell them by subscription. This makes it possible to monetize books that are in the process of being written”. It writes about itself as “a literary platform that turns reading and publishing books into a pleasure”.

The difference from blogging platforms is that access to money here is closed off by a threshold: only an author with "commercial status" may sell, and that status still has to be obtained.

Who's here

The platform's own numbers, given on the front page and in the "About Litnet" section: it has been bringing authors and readers together for more than 10 years, more than 130,000 authors, more than 10 million users. The "About Litnet" section adds: more than 250 thousand books have been collected. These are the platform's own claims, not an independent measurement.

The jurisdiction is named in the footer: Litnet LLC, Moscow, ul. Lva Tolstogo 23, bldg. 3. The rules refer to the requirement of Russian law on age labelling — this is a Russian platform with a Russian legal perimeter. The front page gives an honest warning about the geography of access: the mobile app is “available only from Russia and without a VPN”. An English version is announced but not launched: the "About Litnet" section invites you to become one of the first 30 authors of the beta version.

Getting started

Registration is unrestricted: free and voluntary. The age threshold is stated plainly: to register you must have reached the age of 14; if you are 14 but have not reached the age for entering into contracts in your own jurisdiction, you must read the agreement in the presence of a parent or guardian.

Ways to sign in: a Google, VK or Odnoklassniki account, or registration by phone number and email. A new user receives the status "Reader"; the status "Author" appears after pressing "Add a novel" or "Add a short story".

A pen name is chosen at the first publication, and this decision is almost irreversible: you can change your pen name yourself only by first deleting the books you have already published.

What you can publish

The formats are defined by length, and the right to sell depends on it: a novel — over 120,000 characters, divided into chapters; a short story — up to 40,000 characters in a single chapter; a "mini" — from 40,000 to 210,000 characters. Only novels and mini works may be paid.

The technical frame for presentation: a cover no larger than 8 MB and no smaller than 220×320 pixels, carrying the pen name and the book's title; a blurb of no more than 2,000 characters including spaces; from one to three tags, each no longer than 40 characters. The platform warns: a book without a cover will not appear in the front page's widgets.

Age labelling is mandatory and is set by the author: 12+, 16+ or 18+; by default a work receives 16+; for 18+ the mark is set when it is posted, and for 12+ an application is submitted for moderation. The age rating of a book cannot be changed later. For erotica and its subgenres only the 18+ rating is permitted.

The prohibitions are listed in the publication rules: pirated content; any links to third-party resources except those expressly permitted; political content — campaigning, discussion of the authorities' activities, political statements; personal data of third parties; untrue or insulting information; fraud; mentions of suicide as encouragement; pornographic material; propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations and of gender change; rehabilitation of Nazism. The list reflects the requirements of Russian law, not merely editorial policy.

How to grow

The platform lists the channels an author uses themselves.

Reader mechanics: a "Like" button (a star), the number of which affects the book's rating; awards from readers, which lift a book in the feeds; adding to a library, after which the reader sees all updates and receives a notification when a book is extended by more than 20 thousand characters; and following an author.

A blog with an entry threshold: posts can be created by a user with the status "Author" whose page is followed by at least 50 readers. Selections on the front page come in two kinds: those put together by the Litnet team and those an author applies to through a form; for books submitted off-topic, participation is restricted for three months. Paid channels are named separately: banner advertising on the site, advertising in Yandex.Direct, and the "Litnet Rocket" and "Litnet pays for your advertising" programmes.

Path to monetization

The key to everything is "commercial status". Without it you can publish only free books; the status allows you to sell works, receive royalties for them, post and sell audiobooks, and receive advertising support from Litnet.

The requirements for obtaining the status: a free completed book of more than 250,000 characters (after the status is granted, having a free book remains mandatory); more than 150 regular readers on a book "in progress"; a completed user questionnaire. There is a shortcut for those already working on other platforms: a simplified procedure without gathering 150 readers and without opening a first subscription — if you hold commercial status on Author.Today or LitGorod, or advanced author status on Litres.

Identity verification is mandatory: filling in a questionnaire with passport data and having it checked serves as confirmation of identity, after which the application is filled in online, printed out, signed, scanned and sent for moderation.

The terms of a subscription to an unfinished book are set out in numbers: from 30 to 160 days for a full-length novel (a final length from 300,000 characters) and from 7 to 90 days for a "mini" (60,000–210,000 characters); the minimum published length for sales to start is 25,000 characters for a novel and 5,000 for a "mini"; the first three chapters must have been published no more than 180 days ago; only adults may open a paid subscription.

The price is set as a corridor: 139–1000 roubles for a full-length novel and 39–170 roubles for a "mini". You may leave free no more than 200,000 characters of a novel and no more than 120,000 characters of a "mini".

Payouts: once a month, by the 20th day of the month following the one being paid for — that is, by 20 February you receive the payments for books sold between 1 and 31 January. Payment details and the fees on the payment side: a bank account at a Russian bank or a rouble account in another country — for a payout of less than 80 thousand roubles the fee is 2.5%; a bank card or an account at a foreign bank — also 2.5%. You may give several sets of details, and the option with the lowest fee becomes the primary one.

A penalty for inflating figures is provided for separately: for buying your own book and for encouraging others to make fictitious purchases, Litnet has the right to withhold a penalty from the author amounting to 100% of the sums received under such transactions, setting it off against the author's remuneration automatically.

Opening a subscription is accompanied by the signing of a commercial contract. The royalty rate, judging by the text of the help pages, is disclosed after an application has been accepted: “more detailed instructions on the subscription are sent to the author after their application has been accepted”.

Tools and automation

The robots.txt file closes the service sections /admin/, /auth/, /buy/, /stat/, /site/, search and book downloads to robots — there is no public interface behind them.

What an author has inside: a commercial dashboard, a section for payment details, a "Correspondence" section with an account manager, and reading statistics, available to a co-author as well. Co-authorship is set up by an application citing the book's ID, and the platform immediately disclaims responsibility: Litnet takes on no obligation to audit co-authorship rights and does not act as an arbiter. A reader has access to the epub, mobi and fb2 formats, if the author has allowed downloading.

Limits and rules

Who it's for

Suits you if you write long genre prose and are ready to post it regularly: the model of subscribing to an unfinished book is a rare one, and it brings income long before the novel is finished. Suits those who already hold commercial status on Author.Today, LitGorod or Litres — for them entry is simplified.

Does not suit a fast start: 250,000 characters of a free book and 150 regular readers means months of work before the first rouble. Does not suit short formats: short stories cannot be sold. Does not suit non-fiction commentary or any texts that touch on politics — that is forbidden outright. And it does not suit authors outside the Russian perimeter: payouts require passport verification.
