ShareChat
Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.
Overview
ShareChat is an Indian social network run by Mohalla Tech Private Limited. What sets it apart from the global platforms is not its formats but the axis it is built on: not countries, but the languages of India. Its own company page describes the beginning like this: in November 2014 the founders noticed that people were consuming content in Indian languages on Facebook and WhatsApp; in January 2015 Mohalla Tech was incorporated, and in October 2015 ShareChat launched in four languages at once — Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Marathi (the "About us" page).
Today it is not one app but a family. The same page lists ShareChat (the main social network), Moj (short video, launched in July 2020) and QuickTV (micro-dramas, launched in February 2025). Advertising is sold for ShareChat and Moj together through a shared console (ShareChat Ads).
The practical point for promotion: people come here not for global reach but for a specific Indian reader who consumes content in their own language. Everything else — the rules, the money, the courts — is Indian too.
Who's here
All the figures below are claims by the platform itself.
About ShareChat, the "About us" page reports: more than 110 million monthly active users, more than 1.5 million creators, 31 minutes of average daily time, more than 12 million units of user content per month, and more than 1.1 billion video plays per day (the "About us" page).
The same page separately gives figures for the company's other products, and they must not be mixed with ShareChat's. Moj: more than 100 million monthly active users, more than 550 thousand creators, 40 minutes a day, 3 million units of content created per day, more than 1.3 billion plays per day. QuickTV: 7.3 million subscribers, more than 50 million downloads, more than 90 minutes a day, more than 700 series (same page).
The advertising console counts in its own way — across ShareChat and Moj combined. It states: more than 325 million monthly active users, communication in 15+ languages, more than 165 million units of content shared per month, more than 280 billion video views per month and more than 34 minutes a day. A separate line claims: "1 in 4 internet users in India is on ShareChat" (ShareChat Ads). Note the discrepancy with the figures in the previous paragraph: 110 million and 325 million are different counting perimeters, not different years.
The platform describes its growth history in milestones: September 2017 — 4 million monthly active users, March 2019 — 45 million; December 2021 — 913 million dollars raised at a valuation of 3.7 billion, June 2022 — 255 million at a valuation of 5 billion; September 2025 — the core business turned cash-flow positive, losses fell by 72%, and annual revenue is given as above 1000 crore rupees (105 million dollars) (the "About us" page).
Languages. The platform's help centre exists in sixteen language versions: English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Haryanvi, Rajasthani, Assamese, Bhojpuri and Urdu (the ShareChat help centre). That is the audience map: the app lives where these languages are native.
Getting started
ShareChat is an app, and registration happens inside it. What the platform describes in detail are the paid and status add-ons.
The blue check (ShareChat Blue). This is a paid subscription, not "verification for merit": the help centre says outright that the check means an active SC Blue subscription where the requirements are met. The requirements: an account older than 7 days and active at least once a week; a completed profile photo, name, username and description; a confirmed phone number; no signs of impersonation; a clean record on community and spam rules. To confirm identity you upload a masked document showing only the name, date of birth and photo; after the decision the document's data is deleted. Payment is in Indian rupees only. At the time the page was published the feature was available only to some accounts in test mode (the ShareChat Blue help page).
ShareChat Plus is a different subscription: personalised image sharing (the profile photo, name, phone, email and business name are added to the picture) and a 99% reduction in the advertising load. The first month costs 1 rupee, then the actual rate applies with possible auto-renewal; there are 3 days of free personalised sharing; the subscription is non-refundable. Personalisation is switched on immediately after purchase, the ad-free mode after 60 minutes (the ShareChat Plus help page).
An advertiser needs a separate console: the ShareChat & Moj Ads Manager, with self-service registration, daily budgets and, as the page promises, transparent pricing (ShareChat Ads).
What you can publish
The main formats are images and video with a caption and tags. The platform singles out its own creation tools: "text" (text images), "motion video" and "camera" (the "Original Star" ranking rules). Besides the feed there are chat rooms with virtual gifts (the chat room rules) and Flix — series where some episodes are free and others unlock for "coins" that are debited automatically (the Flix help page).
What is forbidden is set out in the content policy — eleven groups: breaches of Indian law and threats to national security; nudity and pornography, including child abuse material and intimate images without consent; harassment and insults; infringement of intellectual property rights, including unauthorised use of music; violence, including cruelty to animals; hate speech; calls to self-harm and suicide; unlawful activity; other people's personal data without consent; spam, which expressly includes "artificial and manipulative ways of driving up traffic or followers"; disinformation. The enforcement measures are content removal, restriction of access, temporary and permanent blocks for repeat offences, long restrictions for circumventing sanctions, and cooperation with law enforcement (the content policy).
How to grow
This is a rare case of a platform publishing its ranking rules itself.
The "Original Star" competition. The week runs from Monday to Sunday, the ranking updates daily at 5:00 Indian time, and your place is determined by total engagement on your posts. Posts made with ShareChat's tools ("text", "motion video", "camera") carry more weight; videos with a high completion rate and quality images are rated higher. The key limit: only the first 10 posts of the day count towards the ranking. The rewards are a place in the "Original" list, special profile frames and a badge; they last for the duration of the competition (the "Original Star" ranking rules).
Posting streaks. A weekly streak counts with at least 3 posts in the week, a daily one with at least 1 post a day. Missing a week or a day resets the corresponding streak. The "Superstar" badge is given for posting 7 days in a row from Monday to Sunday. Only posts that comply with the community rules and have not been deleted by the author count towards a streak; if you delete all of today's posts, the daily streak resets (the streaks help page).
Paid post promotion (Boost Post). From 1 to 5 posts are chosen at a time; if there are several posts, the views promised by the package are distributed between them at random. The check takes up to 48 hours, and a promoted post gets a marker. The example package in the help centre is 5000 views for 99 rupees. The caveats: posts with music from the ShareChat library cannot be promoted; extra views do not affect the ordinary distribution of impressions and do not count towards milestone rewards; once the promotion moves to "In Progress" status a refund is impossible; the payment is credited within 3–5 working days (the Boost Post help page).
Path to monetization
The honest conclusion: ShareChat has no direct payment for views — the platform ties creators' money to brands and to training.
The Spotlight programme. This is a free mentoring course: registration through Creator Hub, available to every creator who has Creator Hub, and the course takes less than 2 hours in the language of your choice (what Spotlight is, the course price, the duration). After the course you get a certificate and a badge, and the earning itself is described like this: a graduate becomes a candidate for the Spotlight Premium programme, where creators are assessed on tasks and the best are offered to brands for joint projects — they "get the chance to earn", with the caveat "on meeting certain criteria" (how to earn through Spotlight).
The conditions for keeping the badge are numerical too: a minimum of 3 quality original or substantially reworked images or videos a week, posts only in the badge's genre, mandatory participation in your category's campaigns and challenges, and compliance with the community rules (the badge criteria).
The monthly Spotlight Rewards are a campaign for course graduates; winners are selected on criteria and by strict moderation, and the prizes are described as souvenirs, merch, vouchers and gadgets (what Spotlight Rewards is). These are prizes, not payouts.
"Original Creator" status gives, by the platform's description, a right to increased rewards in campaigns while working in a single category, participation in brand campaigns "to earn money when it is available", and personal support from the team (the original creators help page).
The virtual currency cannot be withdrawn. "Coins" are bought with money and spent on gifts and profile decoration; the policy expressly forbids exchanging coins for cash, legal tender or the currency of any state. Gifts received are displayed for the recipient as "diamonds", and diamonds and coins are not convertible into each other. A unit of coins lives for 365 days from the moment of purchase or receipt (the "coins" policy).
Tools and automation
The platform has no official public API: neither the help centre nor the site has a developer section, a description of methods, or access terms.
What is official:
- ShareChat & Moj Ads Manager — a self-service advertising console (ShareChat Ads);
- Creator Hub inside the app — the Spotlight course, certificates, badges (registration for the programme);
- Boost Post — built-in paid promotion (the help page).
On machine reading specifically: the platform's robots.txt fully closes Google's advertising robots (AdsBot-Google and AdsBot-Google-Mobile — Disallow: /), opens /post/, /tag/, /video/ and /profile/ for the rest and forbids addresses with query parameters; the sitemap line ends with a stray quotation mark that breaks the request "as is" (robots.txt). The sitemap itself leads to two sections, and the main one contains seven addresses: the home page, "explore", the video feed, "about", blogs, news and the team page (the sitemap). The public web version is a storefront; the life of the platform happens in the app.
Limits and rules
Automation is forbidden outright. The terms: "You will not introduce any trojans, viruses, any other malicious software, any bots or scrape our Platform for any user information" — that is, bots and the collection of user data are forbidden (same document).
Content rights. By publishing material you grant the platform a non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable and sublicensable worldwide licence to store, use, distribute, copy, publicly display, translate and create derivative works (same document).
Blocks, law and courts. The platform reserves the right to suspend, restrict or terminate access "in whole or in part, at its sole discretion, with or without notice". Disputes are governed by the laws of India, with exclusive jurisdiction in the courts of Bangalore (same document).
Self-serve advertising terms. Payment is in Indian rupees only and is charged for advertising actually shown; invoices are issued monthly for the previous month and payable within 30 days; late payment carries 1.5% a month; changes to a campaign take effect within 24 hours; suspension or termination of an account comes with 7 days' notice; an invoice amount can be disputed within 30 days (the self-serve advertising terms).
The scale of moderation. The most recent transparency report covers 1–31 October 2022. In that month the platform received 3,994,260 user complaints, removed 2,100,269 units of content (including 24,187 on copyright grounds, 24,404 sexually explicit ones, 1,972,611 user materials, 78,777 comments, 290 chat rooms), permanently closed 3,174 accounts and imposed 55,338 temporary restrictions. Ten requests were received from authorities, data was handed over on 6, and on 2 action was taken for breaches of the community rules (the transparency report for October 2022).
Who it's for
It suits brands and creators whose audience is Indian-language speakers living in India, especially outside the largest cities. What works here is the language a person thinks in, and the platform underlines that itself: it grew by adding languages, not countries (the "About us" page).
It suits advertisers who need Indian reach more cheaply and in different places than the global networks offer: the console is self-service, the budget is daily, payment is in rupees (ShareChat Ads, the self-serve advertising terms).
It does not suit those looking for predictable income from views: there is no pay-per-impression mechanic in public sources, and the routes described lead to brand projects and prizes. It does not suit working "through an API": there is no public documentation. It does not suit a desktop web strategy: the public web version is reduced to a few pages.
