Overview
DeepL is a translation tool. Three things at once go into its consumption count: the translation of text, the translation of documents and the improvement of text (the description of consumption and limits in the API). There are no separate counters for each operation.
Characters are counted by Unicode code points, and this is essential for non-Latin languages: the Latin "A", the Greek "Δ", the Japanese "あ" and the Chinese "深" cost one character each. A hieroglyph is no dearer than a letter, although it carries more meaning — when working with Eastern languages the difference in terms of meaning turns out to be noticeable.
The documentation has a machine-readable index llms.txt, served in the format text/plain.
The interface language of the homepage is English. The language switcher in the markup of the homepage lists seventeen languages: ar, cs, de, en, es, fr, id, it, ja, ko, nl, pl, ru, sv, tr, uk, zh.
Which platforms it works with
There are no social platforms in the list of integrations. The list itself on the integrations page consists of working programs: Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, browsers.
One phrase from the same page is easy to read wrongly, so we quote it word for word and with a reservation: "platforms such as LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and X (Twitter)". The phrase relates to the work of the browser extension on other people's sites, not to integration with the programming interfaces of those platforms. The extension works in the browser window over the page — that is not the same as a connected account.
Pricing
There are five plans (the Pro page): Free, Individual — 7.49, Team — 24.99, Business — 49.99 EUR per user a month, Enterprise — on request. The charging is per user a month. The Write Pro add-on costs a further 6.99 EUR per user a month.
The minimum paid price is 7.49 EUR per user a month with annual payment (the Individual plan). This number is tied to the country: on the page at the time of reading the region "Germany (EUR €)" was selected, that is, the price list depends on the country of the visitor, not only on the currency. Your figures may differ from those given simply because of where you are looking from.
Tax is included — the tool says outright: "VAT is included in the price".
The trial period is 30 days.
What is free
There is a free plan, and its boundaries are named (the Pro page): 50,000 characters a month, 1 saved translation, 1 file a month of a size up to 5 MB, 1 glossary of 5 entries.
Separately free is access to the programming interface: the page of the documentation offers a "Free API Key" and a check of the key by a first request. A free level of access to an API among tools of this scale is met rarely — most of those checked give out a key only on paid plans.
Restrictions
Characters are counted by Unicode code points, and into the general count go the translation of text, the translation of documents and the improvement of text together.
In the markup of the page, in place of the numbers by plan stand the templates {{count}}, while of the substituted values 500,000 and "1 million" are visible: free access is limited, the paid plans name "1 million characters per user per month" (the wording in the source is Russian, this is our translation) and higher.
The "unlimited" limits of the senior plans are not unlimited: on the page a reservation is attached to them, "a fair usage policy applies". To write "without restrictions" about such plans is not permissible — a restriction exists, but it is not disclosed.
In the API the arrangement of the limits is convenient. The consumption and the limit are given out almost in real time, with a delay of a few minutes. The limit is set in two ways: on the account through "cost control" and separately on each access key. If a limit is not set, the field returns the value 1,000,000,000,000 — that is, "no limit" is expressed by a large number rather than by an empty value, and a handler has to take this into account (the description of consumption and limits).
How you earn with it
An affiliate programme is not announced (the Partners page). The address /affiliate answers with code 404.
The Partners page exists, but it is about something else: about resellers and about embedding the tool's AI into one's own applications. Neither rates nor a commission for a referred client is announced there, the terms are discussed through a contact form.
What it will not do
To post and translate straight in social networks through connected accounts the tool does not offer: there are no platforms in the list of integrations, and the mention of LinkedIn, WhatsApp and X relates to the browser extension working over other people's pages.
There will be no unlimited work even on the senior plans: to the "unlimited" a fair usage policy is attached, the content of which is not disclosed.
One price for all countries the tool does not have: the price list is tied to the country of the visitor.
To earn on referred clients will not work — the tool does not announce an affiliate programme; the Partners page is addressed to resellers and developers.
The numbers of the limits by plan on the page are substituted by a script — a budget cannot be counted by the published numbers.
The content of the fair usage policy is nowhere disclosed. The set of seventeen languages is declared only in the switcher — the site has no hreflang markup.
