Amazon Associates

Tool · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.

Overview

Amazon Associates is Amazon's affiliate programme. Its dashboard and its description live at affiliate-program.amazon.com, the page title being "Amazon.com Associates Central"; the programme itself is described right there, and it has no separate marketing site.

It is built along classic lines for a product affiliate programme: you place a special link to a product, the reader buys through it, and you are credited a percentage of the qualifying purchase. There is nothing to examine here in the sense of "integrations" — this is not a tool with accounts you connect, but a set of terms that either suit you or do not. That is why this deep dive is built around the terms.

The programme is split by country. The homepage has a switcher that lists the storefronts: United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, Canada, Italy, Spain, India, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Poland, Belgium, Ireland, Turkey, Egypt. This is a list of the programme's country storefronts, not a list of the countries from which participants are accepted. The two must not be confused — the existence of a storefront does not follow that you will be admitted there, nor the other way round.

All the figures below are taken from the pages of the US programme. For other storefronts the terms may differ.

Who is admitted

The wording on the programme's homepage: "Bloggers, publishers and content creators with a qualifying website or mobile app can participate". The key word here is "qualifying": you must have a website or a mobile app that meets the requirements.

The operating agreement adds two requirements about the participant themselves: legal capacity ("you are lawfully able to enter into contracts") and the absence of US sanctions.

There are no numerical requirements on the pages we read. Neither a minimum number of subscribers nor a number of sales in the first months of participation could be found — not on the homepage, not in the agreement, not on the page of participation requirements. That does not mean such requirements do not exist — only that they are not stated on the open pages.

How you earn with it

The rate is set by the product category, not by one general figure. The programme says: "Earn up to 10% in associate commissions from qualifying purchases and programs" and immediately qualifies it — "Rates differ based on product category". The per-product table of rates (/help/operating/schedule) redirects to an Amazon account login, and the percentages by category could not be read.

Hence a practical conclusion: "up to 10%" is an upper bound, not your rate. Until you have seen the table for your own category, there is nothing to plan income on. We are not going to substitute any percentage here.

The lifetime of the click tag is 24 hours, and that is perhaps the harshest condition of the programme. The source describes it through the notion of a session: a purchase counts "during a single session, which is measured as beginning when a customer clicks through that Special Link and ending upon the first to occur of the following: (x) 24 hours elapse from that click" (operating policies). Note: the source does not use the word "cookie" at all — it speaks of a session, and that is its own terminology.

The payout threshold depends on how you receive the money, and here there are two different numbers that are easy to mix up. For a direct transfer and a gift certificate: "If we owe you less than $10, your commissions will be rolled into the next month's total" — less than 10 dollars is rolled into the next month. For a cheque the threshold is different and higher: "The minimum check threshold of $100 still applies to all Associates" (the page about payments). The currency on the page is shown as a dollar sign with no code, and the page relates to the US programme.

Payout methods — there are three: Direct Deposit (a direct transfer to an account), Gift Certificate (an Amazon gift certificate) and Check (a cheque). The full list is set out on a separate help page.

You will have to wait a long time for the money: "Commission income is paid approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which it was earned" — roughly 60 days after the end of the month in which the commission was earned. That is, what is earned in January arrives around the end of March.

Disclosure of advertising is mandatory, and the wording is prescribed word for word. Section 6 of the operating agreement requires: "You must clearly and prominently state the following … "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases."" This is not a recommendation and not a free paraphrase — the text is set by the programme (operating agreement).

The current edition of the terms is at the same address — this is a document worth reading before joining, not after.

What it will not do

It will not show you the rate for your category in advance. The table of per-product rates opens only after logging into an Amazon account; on the open pages there is only the upper bound of "up to 10%".

It will not wait long for a click to turn into a purchase. Twenty-four hours and the tag expires. A reader who comes back for the product a week later will not be credited to you.

It will not pay quickly. Around 60 days after the end of the month is the stated period, not a delay.

It does not announce numerical requirements for participants. How many subscribers, how much traffic or how many sales are needed for an account not to be closed is unknown from the open pages.

It does not state which countries it accepts participants from. The list of twenty-two names is the programme's storefronts, not the geography of admission.

It does not allow you to disclose your participation in your own words — the wording about disclosure is prescribed verbatim and must appear "clearly and prominently".

Verified data

How the money works here

requirements for the applicant's site: «Your Site(s) must contain original content and be publicly available via the website address provided in the application»; «Original content utilizing third-party materials must contain significant commentary, analysis, or transformation». Forbidden site topics: «promote or contain sexually explicit or obscene materials»; «promote violence or contain violent materials or promote, endorse or incite potentially dangerous or harmful acts»; «promote or contain false, deceptive, libelous or defamatory materials»; «promote or contain materials or activity that is hateful, harassing, harmful, invasive of another’s privacy, abusive, or discriminatory»; «promote or undertake illegal activities»; «are directed toward children or knowingly collect, use, or disclose personal information from children under 13»

no minimum traffic is named on the page: there are no figures for subscribers, visitors or posts in the site requirements section. This is the network's statement, not our inference

there is a review of the application, and it is deferred until the first sales: «Once you've applied, you have 180 days to refer a sale through one of your Associates links»; «Once you have referred three qualifying sales, we'll evaluate your application within a day or two and reply to you with our decision»; «Your application can be withdrawn if there were not enough qualifying sales for 180 days after your application was submitted». The network determines suitability itself: «We will determine suitability at our sole discretion»; «If we reject your application due to unsuitable content, you may reapply at any time once you have complied with our suitability requirements»

the quotations about three sales and 180 days come from the help page G7MJTPEP9NC3YKMG; the quotations about sole discretion and reapplying come from the policy page https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/help/operating/policies. robots.txt at affiliate-program.amazon.com returns 404, so there are no crawling prohibitions

the programme publishes no explicit list of countries applicants are accepted from; the only country restriction on admission is sanctions-based: «you will not participate in the Associates Program or use any other Service Offerings if you are the subject of U.S. sanctions or of sanctions consistent with U.S. law imposed by the governments of the country where you are using any Service Offering»

the operating agreement was searched for resident, residing, located in, country of residence, eligible countries, sanctions and embargo — there is no list of countries of admission in it.
